To consider?

As a family or network, it is important to think about:

  • Don't feel guilty. Initiating an intervention is a powerful demonstration of your care and love for the addict, even though it may feel difficult at first.

  • Don't be ashamed. None of you, neither the addict nor you as relatives, have asked to end up in such a difficult and desperate situation.

  • The disease affects everyone. Don't leave anyone in your family or network out of the process. Those who have been negatively affected during the journey often want to be part of the solution.

  • Prioritize. For an intervention to be successful, your full commitment is needed, both in time and resources. You as a family and network must be dedicated to the process to achieve success.

  • Love, care and respect. These three values define you as a family or network when you take on an intervention. Use them in your communication right from the start to facilitate the process.
